| A World of Yesterday - A Heritage Walk through Vienna’s Jewish Central Cemetery
|
|
| A walk through the Old Jewish section of Vienna’s Central Cemetery is simultaneously a journey into Vienna’s Jewish past. Acquired by the Jewish Community in 1877, the so-called Old Jewish Section at Gate 1 became the final resting place of about 80,000 Viennese Jews until 1916. On this walk, we highlight the impressive graves of renowned Jewish figures – rabbis, freedom fighters, industrialists and patrons of the arts – whose inscriptions often recount their lives and achievements. Alongside them are thousands of modest headstones, often overgrown with ivy, broken, leaning, or fallen – a sight that may seem neglected to those unfamiliar with Jewish law. According to it, a grave is a “House of Life” whose sanctity is eternal. It belongs to the deceased and may never be removed or reused for later burials, unlike in non-Jewish traditions. In cooperation with the City of Vienna, today’s small Jewish community strives to preserve this historic section – cutting back trees, controlling weeds and restoring fading inscriptions. This unique site remains a place of remembrance and life, a powerful monument to Vienna’s rich and often tragic Jewish heritage. |
