A River Turned into a Work of Art - The Wien River Deutsche Version dieser Tour
Modest though it may appear, the Wien River (Wienfluss) has countless stories to tell about the city that shars its name. This illustrated walk follows its course from the Pilgramgasse Metro station along the Naschmarkt food market and across Karlsplatz, ending at the elegant Art Nouveau pavilions that mark the entrance to Stadtpark.
As we trace the river’s path, we journey back to the “good old days” of 19th-century Vienna — an era of imperial splendour shadowed by dire sanitary conditions. Along the way, we explore the river’s regulation, Otto Wagner’s visionary Stadtbahn project (today’s U4 Metro line), and the graceful Jugendstil architecture that adorns its embankments.
We’ll also uncover the story of the Karlsplatz tunnel, a feat of engineering that reshaped the city’s heart and later achieved cinematic fame as Harry Lime’s hideout in the classic film The Third Man.
Depending on the season and time of day, the tour may even include a rare glimpse into the mysterious tunnel.
