Vienna - The Making of a Metropolis Deutsche Version dieser Tour
Vienna’s identity has been shaped by centuries of political, cultural, and intellectual history. Its origins date back to the Roman Empire. Under Charlemagne, the region became part of the Holy Roman Empire and, with it, a realm of German-speaking Europe. For more than six centuries, the Habsburg dynasty left its unmistakable mark on Vienna’s political and cultural development.

The reign of Maria Theresa is regarded as the Golden Age of the monarchy. At the same time, the era of Emperor Franz Joseph brought both the final flourishing and the eventual decline of imperial power. The collapse of the monarchy in 1918 marked a profound turning point. With the *Anschluss*—the annexation of Austria into Hitler’s Third Reich—Vienna lost its status as an independent capital and became a centre of Nazi oppression. The Second World War left the city devastated, and for a decade afterwards, Vienna was divided and administered by the Allied powers.

Yet Vienna emerged from the ruins. Today, it stands once more as a vibrant, cosmopolitan city—deeply rooted in its rich past while actively shaping the future. As a member of the European Union and home to several United Nations headquarters, Vienna has returned to the world stage with renewed strength and purpose.
