| Jewish life in Vienna has flourished and faltered many times since the 13th century. Periods of cultural vibrancy, religious freedom, and prosperity contrast sharply with phases marked by rising antisemitism, persecution, expulsion, and murder. This guided tour traces these changing histories and provides a thoughtful overview of the many paths of Vienna’s Jewish community. Along the way, we visit key sites of remembrance and reflection, including the Simon Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies, the Community Centre of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde (IKG), the Gestapo Memorial at Morzinplatz, and the Documentation Centre of the Austrian Resistance. The tour concludes at Judenplatz, where Rachel Whiteread’s Holocaust Memorial stands beside the Jewish Museum, honouring the Austrian victims of the Shoah and preserving their memory in the heart of the city. |
