| Retracing Vienna's Imperial Heritage - Habsburg Vienna
|
|
| This walk immerses you in all the imperial splendour Vienna has to offer – a journey back to the days when Austria ranked among the great powers of Europe. For more than 600 years, the history of Austria and its capital was shaped by the Habsburg dynasty. They were not only rulers of Austria but also Holy Roman Emperors, kings of Bohemia and Hungary, and for a considerable period even monarchs of Spain and Portugal. Everywhere you look, traces of this illustrious past surround you. Our tour begins at St. Stephen’s Cathedral, built not only to the glory of God but also as a symbol of the Habsburgs’ authority on earth. We continue past magnificent palaces of the court nobility and shops that still bear the imperial crest above their doors. At the heart of the city lies the Hofburg Palace – once the epicentre of imperial power and one of Europe’s largest royal residences. The walk concludes at Heldenplatz, originally intended to form part of an enormous “Imperial Forum,” a vision of grandeur that was never fully realised. |
