| Reaching for the Stars - Vienna's New Urban Developments
|
|
| When people think of Vienna, they often picture music, cafés, and magnificent imperial architecture. Yet the city’s skyline is evolving, and Vienna today is as much a laboratory for contemporary urban design as it is a guardian of cultural heritage. This tour focuses on two internationally acclaimed architectural landmarks that are easily accessible from the city centre by metro and explored comfortably on foot: the Vienna University of Economics and Business Campus at the edge of the Prater, and the ambitious new district known as Seestadt Aspern. Designed for 25,000 students and more than 1,000 staff, the university campus is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Renowned architects from Austria, Germany, Japan, Spain, and the United Kingdom collaborated to create a sustainable and functional ensemble of buildings that blends innovation with ecological responsibility. At its heart stands the striking Library and Learning Centre by Zaha Hadid, a bold, sculptural centrepiece of contemporary architecture. Further out, where Zeppelins once touched down, the Seestadt Aspern development is gradually emerging on Vienna’s northeastern edge. Planned for a community of 20,000 residents and an equal number of workplaces, Seestadt is among the largest urban development projects in Europe. Conceived as a model of forward-thinking city planning, it has recently been awarded the Austrian State Prize for Architecture and Sustainability. |
