Art Deco Palaces for the Proletariate - "Red Vienna" Deutsche Version dieser Tour
“Red Vienna” was the bold social and political experiment undertaken by the city’s Social Democratic government in the early 1920s and 1930s. Its mission was nothing short of transformative: to eliminate the appalling living conditions that plagued Vienna after the collapse of the Habsburg Empire and to create a new, dignified model of working-class life within a democratic framework.
For the first time, sunshine and fresh air were no longer luxuries. Healthy, affordable housing for nearly a quarter of a million people was built — architecture that offered not only shelter but a sense of pride and community. The city also introduced a far-reaching system of public health and social welfare that soon gained international acclaim.
Highlights of this tour include the Karl-Marx-Hof, nicknamed “One Kilometre of Art Deco,” one of the world’s longest residential buildings and a global symbol of social housing. We also visit the Amalien Baths, a multifunctional complex and one of Europe’s most prestigious and beautifully designed public bathhouses of its time.
The distinct, functional, and aesthetically striking architecture of Red Vienna captured the admiration of architects and political observers across the world — and its impact and appeal remain undiminished today.
