| Roman Vienna – Vienna’s Beginnings
|
|
| Vienna's origins date back nearly 2,000 years. When the northern frontier of the Roman Empire had to be secured against the advance of Germanic tribes, the Romans established a military camp: Vindobona. It stood precisely where Vienna’s historic city centre lies today, and the outline of its fortifications is still echoed in some of the city’s most distinctive streets. On this tour, we trace the rise and eventual decline of Vindobona and explore the remains of what was once the second most important Roman settlement in Austrian territory. We also shed light on everyday life at the edge of the empire—what it meant to be a Roman legionary posted far from Rome, on a frontier that shaped Vienna’s earliest history. |
