| The Place to See and Be Seen - The Ringstrasse from State Opera to Otto Wagner’s Postal Savings Bank
|
|
| The western stretch of the Ringstrasse is lined with imposing public monuments, while the eastern section exudes a more bourgeois charm. Many of the grand residences along this boulevard were commissioned by wealthy industrial magnates whose favourite promenade was the so-called Corso—the elegant walkway between the Hotel Bristol and Schwarzenbergplatz. On Sunday mornings, this was the place to see and be seen. Over time, luxury hotels rose along the boulevard, and the serene Stadtpark was created as an oasis of greenery. During our walk, you will hear the intriguing stories hidden behind these façades: how a private mansion was transformed into the illustrious Imperial Hotel, why Emperor Franz Joseph’s youngest brother was barred from court, why the famous Blue Danube Waltz was originally composed for a choir, and how a Soviet war memorial came to dominate Schwarzenbergplatz. The tour concludes at Otto Wagner’s splendid Postal Savings Bank — a masterpiece of Viennese Modernism and one of the architect’s most impressive achievements. |
